Description 🔉

Two German Third Reich Photograph Albums, Operation Barbarossa and SS-Brigade Leader Interest
Comprising:

The first album, titled ‘Kriegserinnerungen’ (War Memories), circa May–December 1941, relating to Operation Barbarossa and Operation Typhoon, containing approximately 195 black and white photographs depicting the German Army’s advance towards Moscow. Images include signposts (one reading ‘Kaluga’), soldiers with horses, transportation, farriers, ordnance, aeroplanes overhead, war graves, damaged buildings and weaponry, winter scenes, and soldiers at rest. Photographs predominantly 6cm x 6cm, laid down within the album, pages detached from the covers.

The second album containing approximately 55 black and white photographs, each circa 12cm x 8.5cm. Subjects include a Torch Bearer statue beside a rally or parade ground, German Police, SA personnel and civilians, gymnastics and equestrian displays, and a dinner event attended by an SS-Brigade Leader (collar tab style indicating pre-April 1942), possibly Ernst-Heinrich Schmauser—later responsible for the Auschwitz death march and believed executed after capture by Russian forces. The presence of the Torch Bearer statue suggests these images may have been taken in Nuremberg around May 1941, where Schmauser was briefly posted. Some creasing to photographs, staining to pages, and watermarks and tears to the covers.

Sold together with a small Album de Luxe of printed views of Brussels. (3)
