Description 🔉
A fine and attractive example of an Ottoman kilij, dating to the late 18th or very early 19th century, circa 1790–1800.
The sword features the characteristic strongly curved blade associated with the Ottoman kilij, together with traditional horn or similar organic grip scales.
The blade is engraved with striking crescent-and-sun celestial motifs, imagery with longstanding symbolic and talismanic associations in the Ottoman world.
The kilij was one of the most distinctive swords of the Ottoman world. Developing from earlier Turkic sabres, it is recognisable by its pronounced curvature and powerful cutting blade, frequently widening towards the point. By the late 18th century, the kilij had developed into a particularly robust and elegant form, carried by Ottoman military officers and other men of status. Surviving museum examples from this period demonstrate the use of horn grips (Some with rhino horn) cruciform guards and richly decorated or inscribed blades.
Condition: Overall in good condition for its age, displaying an attractive degree of age-related wear and patination. The crossguard is currently loose and would benefit from sympathetic refastening.
