Description 🔉
A lovely Helmet, Steel, Mark I circa post May 1917 with chinstrap. Asbestos liner has been removed.
The A lovely Helmet, Steel, Mark I was introduced in Spring, 1916, a modified version of the Brodie helmet with a wholly redesigned liner and a mild steel rim to the shell. In 1917, a rubber ring or "doughnut" was added between the liner and the top of the shell.
Frequently Asked Questions
When was the Helmet Steel MK1 introduced?
The Helmet Steel MK1 was initially approved on the 15th of May 1917 with full approved granted in July. These helmets had non-reflective textured paint and can be differentiated from their earlier counters from the rubber donut located beneath the liner.
How can I distinguish this helmet from a pre-1917 Brodie helmet?
As a general rule, the easiest way to distinguish a post-1917 Brodie helmet from an earlier example is by examining the liner. Helmets fitted with the improved 1917 pattern liner incorporate a rubber cushioning ring (often referred to as a "rubber doughnut") between the liner and the steel shell. This additional padding was introduced to improve comfort and absorb impact.
Earlier pre-1917 helmets lack this rubber ring and instead use the original liner construction, making them readily distinguishable once the interior is examined.
While the presence of the rubber ring is one of the quickest indicators of a post-1917 helmet, collectors should also consider other features—such as liner construction, chinstrap fittings and manufacturer markings—when dating an individual example, as liners could occasionally be replaced during a helmet's service life.
