Description 🔉

Oil painting on canvas by Charles Willis (1878–1963), circa 1920, signed C Willis. The scene depicts a Victorian mother holding a storybook as she opens a door for her young daughter at bedtime. The girl looks up at her mother while holding a yellow teddy bear. Viewed from the top of a staircase, the interior features decorative panelled walls, a deep red floral carpet and cameos hanging on the wall. A large window illuminates the landing, with a decorative pot of garden flowers completing the setting. Willis was a portrait painter and commercial artist who later painted conversation pieces; his royal portraits appeared in commemorative magazines and newspapers during the 1930s. Dimensions: 19.5 inches high × 15.5 inches wide.
