Description 🔉

"Fishing On The River ", Glamorgan by wellknown William Henry Mander ( British 1850-1922) signed lower left, titled verso, oil on canvas.
Size frame 71 x 107 cm.
Note; William Henry Mander was born in Aston, Birmingham, England in 1846 and was the son of John Mander (1824-1861), a fender maker whose trade he followed until c.1870. The census for 1871 records Mander as a 24-year-old married man living in Deritend a Birmingham suburb and working as a ‘Carver & Guilder’. He was similarly recorded in the 1881 census and it was not until 1891 that he was listed as an artist and landscape painter. By 1901 he and his wife were living in Dolgellau, Merionethshire where many of his views of North Wales were executed. He returned to Birmingham in 1907 and lived in the suburb of Kings Heath. Mander was a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists. He also exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin and Royal Cambrian Academy in Conwy, Wales.
Provenance: private North Wales collection.
