Description 🔉

Watercolour believed to have been painted by Hon Mrs Lettice Bowlby representing a room in Croughton House, Brackley, Northants. Having married Captain Geoffrey Bowlby in 1911, they had two children before he was killed in 1915. Lettice searched the field where he was killed and found it had been bough by the sister of another casualty. The matter was resolved by both parties erecting a monument 150 metres apart. During the war, Lettice was commandant of the auxiliary hospital and was twice mentioned in dispatched. She was lady in waiting to Queen Elizabeth, the Queen's Mother from 1923-1927. Died February 13 1988 in Ireland at the age of 102.
