Capture Of The Droits De L'Homme Scene By Donald MacLeod

This item has been purchased.

Description 🔉

A stunning oil on canvas painting by renowned naval artist Donald MacLeod, measuring 105 x 75 cm.

Story:
The 74-gun French ship Droits de l'Homme was returning from the failed expedition to Ireland when, on 13 January 1797, it encountered HMS Amazon and HMS Indefatigable, under the command of Edward Pellew, off the coast of Brittany. Typically, frigates would avoid engaging a ship of the line due to being heavily outgunned. However, the rough seas prevented the French ship from opening its lower deck gunports for fear of flooding, significantly reducing its firepower and making it vulnerable.
