There was an exquisite object, known to all travellers, the gondola hook - The staff of the cabman of Venice. Is not the gondolier the cabman of Venice. Of the collection of gondola hooks, the prides of the gondoliers, one in particular should not pass unobserved. It had a handle of wood, inlaid with old coins and medals, surmounted with a statuette, the lower end terminating in a steel hook or gaff. The wood used in all these beautiful objects was Italian walnut.';
