Description 🔉
This beautiful mahogany military campaign writing desk is a real statement piece and dates to the mid to early 19th century.
Campaign furniture is a type of furniture made for travel. Historically, much of it was made for military campaigns. These pieces were designed to be broken down or folded for ease of travel, hence the name. The concept dates back to the times of Julius Caesar and Napoleon, but it was most popular during the British Empire in the 19th and 20th centuries.
As wars were fought across continents, high-ranking military officials and their entourage needed to maintain a certain level of comfort and functionality while on the move. Therefore, they required furniture that was portable yet sophisticated. This need led to the creation of campaign furniture, which was designed to be robust, easily transportable, but also stylish. Our example has handles on either end for ease of movement and comes apart in two section so the writing desk can be easily disassembled.
