A rare Venetian Gondoliers Boat Hook. Probably dating to the early 19th century. 44cm long. Page 75 from 'A novel of Snobocracy' accurately describes the item:
'There was an exquisite object, known to all travellers, the gondola hook - The staff of the cabman of Venice. Is not the gondolier the cabman of Venice. Of the collection of gondola hooks, the prides of the gondoliers, one in particular should not pass unobserved. It had a handle of wood, inlaid with old coins and medals, surmounted with a statuette, the lower end terminating in a steel hook or gaff. The wood used in all these beautiful objects was Italian walnut.'
Condition: Good condition with some wear.
