In this style of furniture, the individual wooden spindles that comprise the piece are crafted by shaping them with chisels and gouges while they are being rotated on a lathe. Craftsmen who specialized in creating such furniture were referred to as "turners" or "bodgers," which is where the surname Turner originates from.
