Living Room Wall Art

Frequently Asked Questions

What living room wall art is best?

The best living room wall art is artwork that suits the scale, character and colours of the space. Original oil paintings, landscapes, portraits, watercolours and vintage prints can all work well, particularly when chosen to complement rather than simply match the surrounding furniture.

What size wall art should I choose for a living room?

The right size depends on the wall and the furniture around it. Large, open walls can accommodate substantial paintings or groups of smaller artworks, while narrower spaces often suit a single smaller piece. The artwork should feel proportionate to the room rather than becoming lost on the wall.

What size artwork should I hang above a sofa?

As a general guide, artwork above a sofa often looks most balanced when it is around two-thirds the width of the sofa. This can be one large painting or a carefully arranged group of smaller works.

How high should wall art be hung in a living room?

Artwork is generally most comfortable to view when its centre is close to eye level. When hanging a painting above a sofa, fireplace or other furniture, its position should also relate visually to the furniture beneath it rather than appearing isolated on the wall.

Does living room wall art need to match the furniture?

No. Artwork does not need to match your furniture exactly. Antique and vintage artwork can provide an effective contrast in both traditional and contemporary interiors, introducing colour, texture and character without making the room feel overly coordinated.

Is antique or vintage art suitable for a modern living room?

Yes. Antique paintings and vintage prints can work particularly well in modern living rooms, where older frames, materials and subject matter can provide contrast against contemporary furniture and simpler interiors.
