Frequently Asked Questions
Who was Nock of London?
Henry Nock (1741–1804) was a renowned London gunmaker, inventor and engineer. Celebrated for the quality and innovation of his firearms, he produced everything from fine duelling pistols and sporting guns to military weapons, including the famous seven-barrelled Nock volley gun as used by Harper on the TV series Sharpe. In 1789, he was appointed Gunmaker-in-Ordinary to King George III. After his death, his business was continued by his son-in-law James Wilkinson and eventually developed into Wilkinson Sword.
How can you tell that this pistol was converted from flintlock to percussion?
The conversion can be identified by the survival of the original flintlock priming pan, which would once have held the priming powder, alongside the later addition of a percussion nipple. These features provide clear evidence of the pistol’s conversion from its original flintlock configuration.
What was this pistol used for?
A muff pistol was a small, easily concealed pocket pistol, typically carried by women for personal protection. Its name comes from the practice of carrying such pistols discreetly inside a hand-warming muff, particularly when travelling or out in public.
