An unusual 1897 pattern Victorian Indian officers sword outfitted by Manton at their Calcutta office, made in London, features a small badge bearing thistles insignia. The motto Nemo me impune lacessit adorns the guard. Its believed that the sword initially belonged to a Regular officer before being utilized by the Calcutta Scottish Regiment in the early part of the 20th century. Volunteer regiments often used equipment and arms which did not conform to the standard pattern, possibly explaining why the Crown is Queens when the regiment was only established in 1914 and should be Kings.
